On Wednesday, March 28, 2018, Marist College hosted its first-ever Marist Fights Cancer and Gives Hope Event to benefit the American Cancer Society. Formerly known as Relay for Life, this event was restructured to meet the changing needs of Marist’s student body and of the American Cancer Society. The event was held from 11:30 AM – 1:30 PM in the Murray Student Center river rooms, and consisted of many activities including bingo, minute to win it games, a photo booth, a cornhole tournament, and Zumba. Then, there was prize drawings for prizes such as parking ticket passes from security, gift cards, and even an iPhone! To hold true to the theme of a traditional Relay for Life event, Marist Fights Cancer and Gives Hope had an information table that had flyers on what the American Cancer Society does, where funds raised go to, and preventative measures. Additionally, luminaria bags were sold to honor those who have battled cancer, and a video was shown to honor survivors and remember those lost to cancer from the Marist College community. The event raised over $3,000, surpassing the committee’s goal. Overall, the event was fun and successful, and the committee hopes to host it again next year with a larger fundraising goal!
